AI-enabled predictive building re-use and re-purpose strategies support Circular Design 4.0 by using data, machine learning, and digital twins to help us think ahead about how buildings might change over time. By analysing factors such as structural performance, material damage, space use, and future market or regulatory trends, AI can help predict potential re-use scenarios. This makes it easier to extend the life of buildings, reduce waste, and protect embodied carbon. How could these AI-driven predictive tools be realistically embedded into Circular Design 4.0 design and decision-making processes?

In the future, HERA’s material passport software could be integrated into the Ngākopa Construction 4.0 toolbox to match available materials with likely new builds or refurbishments (like the donor registry model). Will be keen to see what ideas others have.
